Umar Rashid’s work blends real and imagined histories to explore how narratives of colonial power, identity, and influence are constructed. In this showcase, Rashid presents his new series There are other worlds than these (2026), which explores the cosmic and terrestrial merging of strange worlds. The series follows the Panopteans, many-eyed, wise figures who live in peace, studying the higher sciences in their pursuit of inner truths. They are confronted by the Omegans, intergalactic aggressors ruled by a warlord who moves planet to planet, spreading his cloned army. With this series, Rashid branches off of his long-running historical saga, introducing new characters and a new interplanetary scope. The narrative explores the logic of ‘might makes right’ mentality in colonial expansion, and what happens in moments of forced cultural synthesis.
